It is the county seat of Whitfield County and the principal city. Dalton is located at 34°46′16″in North and 84°58′18″in West. Dalton has total area of 51.4 km². Thus 51.3 km² area is occupied by land while other 0.1 km² is occupied by water. According to a report that was generated in 2000, the population of Dalton was 27,912.

The great Dalton carpet industry was developed with a wedding gift given by a teen age girl “Catherine Evans Whitener” to her brother “Henry Alexander Evans” and his bride “Elizabeth Cramer” in 1895. The gift was a unique but good looking tufted bed spread. Periodically interest developed in young Catherine’s bed spread and she sold her first bed spread in 1900 for 2.50 Dollars. The demand of such beautiful bed spread grew during 1930s and afterwards whole family started to hand tufts the spread for 10 to 25 cent per spread.
