Carpet Sweepers

Till 1840s, there were not any mechanical devices available for the proper cleaning of rugs and carpets. So then it was the duty of home maids to keep carpet clean or sometimes house women performed this duty. Carpets were woven of finer materials. Rugs and small carpets were taken outside several times a year, hung on heavy clothes-lines, and beaten with fan-shaped beaters to drive out the dust. Larger carpets were left in place and brushed; curtains were also cleaned by beating and brushing.

Finally in 1976, Melville Reuben Bissell, who was the owner of china shop Grand Rapids, Michigan introduced the very first successful and useful carpet sweeper by putting a rotary bush in a small canister with a push handle. Bissell’s invention was result to fulfill his on need bits of packing crate straw became imbedded in his carpet. Melville sweeper picked up both straws and dust from the space to dispose afterwards. Melville gave name to his invention after his own name that was “Grand Rapid”. Its revolutionized home care gave a new trend and beating of carpet became less frequent.

On the other side of the Atlantic, a British company called Ewbank conquered the market. During 1880, Ewbank sweepers were being used in many homes including the palaces of Britain's royal family. Ewbank introduced models in several sizes with miniatures for ladies to operate, followed by the larger standard and the parlor Queen, which boasted "a very powerful pattern for the thickest piles." The carpet sweeper was foremost through the 1930s. Its internal parts were cast of aluminum, making these machines light and easy to use.

A carpet sweeper is, basically, light weight having a small box. The base of the box has rollers and brushes, connected by a belt or gears. There is also a container for dirt. The arrangement is such that when pushed along a floor the rollers turn and force the brushes to rotate. The brushes sweep dirt and dust from the floor into the container. Carpets sweepers would frequently have a height adjustment that enables them to work on different lengths of carpet, or carpet less floors. The sweeper usually has a long handle so that it can be pushed without bending over.

Conclusively, carpet sweeper is a great invention. It makes carpet cleaning and entire home cleaning very easy. However, today there are several other types of cleaners also available in the market to properly clean you carpet. So latest technologies have made carpet cleaning hassle free.
